Winter Electrical Safety Checklist for Perth Homes

6 min read By SwitchedOn Electrical

Perth winters may be mild compared with other parts of Australia, but they still put extra pressure on your home’s electrical system. Portable heaters come out of storage, dryers run more often, outdoor areas get wet, and older switchboards can start showing signs of strain.

Most electrical problems do not appear without warning. Flickering lights, a tripping safety switch, buzzing power points, warm plugs, burning smells or a heater that keeps cutting out can all point to a fault that should be checked before it becomes dangerous.

Use this winter electrical safety checklist to reduce risk around your home and know when it is time to call a licensed electrician.

1. Check heaters before plugging them in

Portable heaters are one of the most common appliances used during winter, but they need to be treated carefully.

Before using a heater, check the power cord, plug and casing. Do not use it if you can see cracking, melting, exposed wiring, burn marks or signs of damage. Keep heaters away from curtains, bedding, clothing, rugs and furniture, and never leave them running unattended.

Avoid plugging heaters into power boards, double adaptors or extension leads. Heaters draw a lot of power, and overloading a power board can cause overheating or fire. Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet where possible.

Call an electrician if a heater trips the power, makes a burning smell, causes lights to dim, or makes the plug or power point feel warm.

2. Stop overloading power boards

Winter often means more appliances running at the same time: heaters, dryers, chargers, lamps, computers, televisions and kitchen appliances. If one area of the home does not have enough power points, it is easy to start relying on power boards and extension leads.

A power board should be a short-term convenience, not a permanent solution. Do not piggyback one power board into another. Do not run extension leads under rugs or furniture. Do not use cracked, discoloured or loose power boards.

If you constantly need extra outlets in the same room, it is safer to have additional power points installed by a licensed electrician.

3. Test your RCD safety switches

Your RCD, also called a safety switch, is one of the most important electrical safety devices in your home. Circuit breakers and fuses help protect wiring from overloads and short circuits, but an RCD is designed to reduce the risk of electric shock by cutting power quickly when it detects leakage current.

In Western Australia, RCDs should be tested regularly. Open your meter box, find the button marked “T” or “Test”, press it, and check that the switch trips immediately. Then reset it to restore power.

If the RCD does not trip, trips slowly, will not reset, or keeps tripping after being reset, call a licensed electrician. A tripping RCD is not just an inconvenience; it can be a sign of a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or another electrical fault.

4. Know the WA RCD rules if selling, renting or hosting short-stay guests

If you are selling, renting or hiring out a residential property in Western Australia, RCD compliance is not optional. WA requirements state that residential premises being sold, rented or hired must have at least two RCDs protecting power point and lighting circuits.

Short-term rental accommodation also needs compliant RCD protection before guests stay at the property.

Even if you are not selling or renting, it is still worth checking whether your home has modern RCD protection. Older homes with ceramic fuses or outdated switchboards may not provide the same level of protection expected in current installations.

5. Check smoke alarms before winter gets busier

Smoke alarms should not be treated as a “set and forget” item. Test each alarm, check the expiry date, and clean around it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

In WA, homes being sold, rented or hired must have compliant smoke alarms that are in working order, connected to mains power, and not more than 10 years old or past their expiry date. Mains-powered smoke alarms must be installed and removed by a licensed electrician.

If your alarm keeps chirping after cleaning or battery replacement, or if it is close to 10 years old, it may need replacing.

6. Watch for switchboard warning signs

Your switchboard is the control centre of your home’s electrical system. If it is old, overcrowded or struggling with modern electrical loads, winter can make problems more noticeable.

Warning signs include:

  • Ceramic fuses or an outdated fuse box
  • Frequent circuit breaker or RCD trips
  • Flickering or dimming lights
  • Buzzing from the switchboard
  • Burning smells near the meter box
  • Scorch marks, heat damage or melted components
  • No clearly labelled circuits
  • No RCD protection, or only limited RCD protection

Do not open or work inside the switchboard yourself. Switchboard repairs and upgrades must be completed by a licensed electrician.

7. Be careful with outdoor power and lighting

Wet weather can expose electrical faults around outdoor areas. Garden lights, patio power points, pool equipment, pumps and outdoor appliances are all more vulnerable when moisture gets into fittings or damaged cables.

If your RCD trips during or after rain, do not ignore it. Moisture may be entering an outdoor fitting, conduit, junction box or appliance. Resetting the RCD repeatedly without finding the cause can leave the fault unresolved.

Outdoor power points and lighting should be weather-rated, correctly installed and protected by suitable safety devices.

8. Do not DIY electrical repairs

Replacing a light switch, power point, fixed light fitting, hard-wired appliance, smoke alarm or switchboard component is not a DIY job.

In Western Australia, electrical work must be carried out by someone with the relevant electrical licence. Using an unlicensed person or trying to complete fixed wiring work yourself can create a serious risk of electric shock, fire and non-compliant work.

If electrical installation work is completed at your property, your electrical contractor should provide the required electrical safety certificate within the correct timeframe.

9. Book an inspection if something does not feel right

Small electrical warning signs are easy to dismiss, especially when the power still works. But winter is not the time to ignore them.

Call a licensed electrician if you notice:

  • Lights flickering when appliances start
  • A burning smell from a switch, plug, appliance or switchboard
  • Repeated RCD or circuit breaker trips
  • Power points that feel warm
  • Buzzing, crackling or sparking
  • Smoke alarms that are expired or not working
  • Outdoor lights or power points affected by rain
  • An old switchboard with ceramic fuses
  • Too few power points for your home’s normal use

A proper inspection can identify the cause and help prevent a minor fault from becoming an emergency.
